Design Statement: A new life form is born in all its beauty and disgust. The notion of renewal can be identified within the theme of mould through the regeneration of organisms on dying organic matter within soil, and the growth of mould upon natural fibres under specific conditions. Textiles made from natural fibres are hygroscopic, under the right conditions mould thrives upon these fibres, and is a resilient life form therefore difficult to rid of once infection spreads. On the contrary, mould is an important form of renewal as it is essential in the breakdown of organic plant matter within soil. As mould decomposes organic matter beneath the soil, it consumes nutrients which are returned to the soil creating rich compost, and therefore the renewal of organic matter. To explore this, only natural fibres, materials and dyes were used in the process of creating the swatches. The texture and colours of varying types of mould have individually influenced the design process of each swatch created. This piece explores the design practice of textile production, focusing on shapes and how they can be used to create depth and suggest the imagery of mould. The calico base was saturated in water before being painted with black ink to create a moulded design effect. The swatch was then quilted using freehand machine embroidery and felt backing to create texture. This piece continues the cohesive use of natural materials and products throughout the theme of my swatches.
